Top tips to keep your dog's teeth clean & healthy

Top tips to keep your dog's teeth clean & healthy

Why your dog’s dental health matters

Just like us, dogs can suffer from dental problems if their teeth and gums aren’t properly looked after. Plaque, tartar, bad breath and even painful gum disease can develop — and if left untreated, it can lead to costly vet bills and discomfort for your dog.

Some breeds are more prone to dental issues, while others may develop problems from injuries or poor chewing habits. The good news? With a few simple, consistent habits, you can help keep your dog’s mouth clean, healthy and pain-free.

1. Brush their teeth regularly

Brushing your dog’s teeth might sound tricky at first, but it’s one of the most effective ways to reduce plaque and tartar build-up — the main culprits behind gum disease and bad breath.

  • Start slowly: Let your dog sniff and taste their dog-friendly toothpaste first.
  • Choose the right tools: Use a vet-approved dog toothbrush or a soft cloth wrapped around your finger for dogs with smaller mouths.
  • Pick a tasty flavour: Our Roast Dinner Toothpaste has a meaty flavour, is low-foaming, and gentle on enamel — and dogs love it!
  • Use gentle motions: Brush in slow circles and keep sessions short and sweet.
  • Reward them: Finish with a favourite treat or a cuddle to make it a positive experience.

💡 Top tip: Daily brushing is ideal, but even once a week can make a big difference.

2. Chewing is good (the right kind!)

Chewing isn’t just entertaining for your dog — it’s great for their teeth too! Chews help naturally scrape away plaque and keep gums stimulated.

Try:

  • Natural chews like yak milk chews, or raw chicken wings (We always recommend supervising dogs while they are chewing).
  • Dental chews designed to reduce plaque (just watch the calories!).
  • Adding Fragaria 3C, our best-selling homeopathic remedy, to help soften and reduce tartar build-up.

3. Feed for dental health

Some foods encourage chewing and help naturally clean teeth. Including dry or fibrous foods that need a bit of a crunch can be great for oral hygiene — just make sure it fits with your dog’s overall diet plan.

4. Stay consistent

Whether you brush weekly, offer daily chews, or add herbal support — the key to success is consistency. A little effort, done regularly, can prevent painful (and expensive) problems later on.

5. Watch out for warning signs

Even with the best care, dental issues can still crop up. Keep an eye out for:

  • Persistent bad breath
  • Brown staining on teeth (tartar)
  • Red, swollen or bleeding gums
  • Reluctance to chew
  • Pawing at the mouth

If you notice any of these signs, it’s best to consult your vet.
